Mohawk Carpet

One out of four recycled plastic bottles in North America transforms into components that make Mohawk EverStrand residential carpeting. EverSTRAND™ carpets, made using PET (polyethylene terephthalate) that is extruded from recycled plastic bottles, contain 100% postconsumer recycled content. Mohawk recycles every part of the plastic bottles, including the cap, the label, and the bottle. The cap and the label are used to make carpet cores around which the carpet is wrapped. These are reused over and over again, unlike cardboard cores that would typically be discarded. With SmartStrand® carpet with Du-Pont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer. In a partnership with DuPont, this carpet exclusively offers fiber made with Bio-PDO™ (the key Sorona ® ingredient), which is produced from corn sugar.

-The production of Sorona® polymer requires 30% less energy than the production of an equal amount of nylon.

-Greenhouse gas emissions from the production of Sorona® are 63 percent lower than nylon manufacturing.

-This energy reduction results in approximately one gallon of gasoline saved per every seven square yards of carpet.

Teragren Bamboo

Teragren is a manufacturer, not simply an importer, working exclusively with one factory group in the Zhejiang Province of China to ensure products are manufactured to stringent Teragren and environmentally conscious specifications. The factory is ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001-certified with 11 quality control inspection stations in the production process, plus a quality control engineer performing spot checks. The Moso bamboo specified by Teragren for use in its bamboo building products is plantation grown in managed agricultural plots by independent farmers. Teragren supports these farmers and their families by paying fair market value for raw materials and by encouraging proper stewardship of this valuable resource. Teragren bamboo is harvested at maturity at 5 ½ to 6 years, leaving behind a thriving plant and new shoots. Harvesting sooner results in softer fiber and less stable finished product. Unlike hardwood trees requiring more than 60 years to mature, bamboo is a grass that is sustainably harvested over and over from the same root stalk. In addition, the Moso specie is not a food source for pandas.

RB Rubber Products

Today, RB Rubber is recognized nationally as a leader in rubber flooring and rubber recycling technology. It is with a sense of proud accomplishment that RB Rubber is able to take a waste material and turn it into a product that is in demand and still in use 5, 10, and 20 years later. Tire derived fuel (TDF) refers to the use of scrap tires as a substitute for a fossil fuel. This is essentially the act of recovering the BTU value contained in a scrap tire. The average 20 lb. passenger tire contains 280,000 BTU - the equivalent of 2.5 gallons of oil or 20 pounds of coal.

Life-cycle analysis shows that Marmoleum linoleum products are the ecologically preferred floor covering. Linoleum is produced from renewable materials: linseed oil, rosins, wood flour, jute and ecologically responsible pigments. Marmoleum has no adverse health issues whatsoever, either during production, their useful lives, or disposal. Marmoleum is the "natural" choice when health concerns are involved. For this reason it is broadly applied in many hospitals, as well as being recommended by medical professionals to people with respiratory disorders. Marmoleum engages in responsible product sourcing that combines Marmoleum's customers' preference for quality with care for the environment, carefully selecting suppliers who reflect our environmental and social concerns. Marmoleum constantly seeks to improve the environmental performance of our processes; all of our manufacturing operations are ISO 14001 certified. Raw materials and energy are used efficiently, waste is recycled wherever possible, and emissions are kept to an absolute minimum.

Natural Cork

A member of the Beech family, the cork oak tree grows in coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Relatively slow growing, these trees survive harsh condition in depleted soil that will support little else of value.

Unlike most trees where primary value is derived from the lumber of the trunk, cork is actually obtained from the bark of the tree. Grown on farms and harvested every 9 to 11 years, the financial benefit lies not in felling these trees but in keeping them alive and in production for generations.

Lyptus Wood

The eucalyptus trees are grown on plantations certified to Brazil's national sustainable forestry standard, CERFLOR. This standard has been recognized by the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), an international organization that endorses credible sustainable forestry programs Eucalyptus trees grow quickly and can be harvested within 14 to 16 years of planting. Because these plantation trees are manually pruned during their growing years, logs coming into the mill are more uniform and have fewer knots. This in turn results in a high conversion rate of logs to clear lumber. Like our mills in the United States, our Brazil mill uses virtually every portion of the log, converting it not only into lumber and by-products, but also using the residuals as bio-energy to fuel the mill.
